APERITIF & MISCELLANEOUS

Enhance the meal with an aperitif

A successful invitation also includes an aperitif. Whether you are looking for ingredients for a cocktail or long drink, or want to enjoy the aperitif on its own, you are sure to find what you are looking for here. Angostura bitters are indispensable in Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Pisco Sour and Singapore Sling. We also stock Bacardi, Campari, Pimm's, Martini and Vermut. Pastis and absinthe are exciting in the glass, as they change colour when water is added. Absinthe, the green fairy, was banned in Switzerland until recently. Absinthe from the Val de Travers in the canton of Neuchâtel is well known. Other classic aperitifs include Fernet Branca, Cynar made from artichokes, Martini, Aperol Spritz and Greek Ouzo. Noilly Prat is used in many different ways in the kitchen..

LIKÖR

A liqueur can be produced in a wide variety of flavours, making it an exciting and very versatile drink. Generally, fruit juice is mixed with sugar and alcohol. The most popular flavours are orange liqueur, herbal liqueur, coffee liqueur, amaretto, limoncello, sambuca, blue curaçao, Appenzeller Alpenbitter and egg liqueur.

Many countries produce their own very special creations, some of which are world-famous. In France, Grand Marnier, Triple Sec, Cointreau, Chartreuse and St Germain are produced. Other classics include Baileys from England, Japanese plum wine, the Mexican coffee liqueur Kahlúa, Scottish whisky liqueur, the barrel-aged cream liqueur Amarula from South Africa and Jägermeister from Germany. Italy supplies us with Amaretto Disaronno, Ramazotti, Limoncello, Maraschino, Averna, Sambuca and the trendy drink Braulio from Lombardy, while Switzerland is known for its egg liqueur, Williams and Appenzeller Alpenbitter.

The alcohol content is sometimes less than 20 per cent and is therefore rather low for a spirit. However, there are also liqueurs with over 45 per cent alcohol. Liqueur can be drunk neat, used to flavour desserts such as tiramisu and creams or as an ingredient in cocktails and mixed drinks such as the El Presidente, the Black Russian, the Apple Martini, the B52, the Margarita, the Cosmopolitan or a Kir Royal..

FRUIT BANDS

Discover fruit brandies made from a wide variety of fruits

The Swiss fruit brandies from Etter in Zug and from Fassbind are world class. French fruit brandies are also known for their outstanding quality. The finest types of fruit brandies are Zuger Kirsch, plum spirits, calvados made from apple or apple and pear, which is always matured in barrels, whereby the sweetness is clearly regulated, abricotine or the fine Williams fruit brandy. Cherries, wild cherries, plums, damsons, apricots, apples, pears, raspberries, other berries, Williams pears, quinces and others are used as a base. Elegant fruit brandies should always be served at room temperature or at most slightly chilled. They are versatile and can be used as an aperitif or digestif. Fruit brandies are also often mixed with tea or coffee.

Like cognac, fruit brandies are produced using a still. Some are matured in barrels, others are not. The fruit brandies that are not matured in barrels generally retain a stronger fruity aroma, while the barrel-matured brandies absorb some of the aromas and dark colour from the barrel. Brandy is produced by making a wine and then fermenting it further. The difference to brandy lies in the fact that fruit is suspended in a net over the alcohol, whereby the alcohol rises through the net and the fruit and thus takes on the flavour. If fruit brandies are labelled Vieille, this indicates that the spirit has matured in a barrel. One such example is the well-known Vieille Prune..

TEQUILA

Explore the flavour nuances of the finest tequila

In Mexico, the spirit mezcal is made from agave. Sometimes a bottle of mezcal also contains a worm, which has made it quite famous. However, the best-known variant of mezcal is tequila. It is produced in the area surrounding the Mexican city of Tequila in the Jalicso region. Only the hearts of the blue agave are used to make tequila. These agave hearts are baked in a fire wall and the resulting sugary mass is then subjected to fermentation. One producer of absolute premium tequila is Don Julio, but Hollywood great George Clooney is also getting into the tequila business and competing with Justin Timberlake, who also produces and markets his own tequila.

The aroma of tequila is herbal, greenish and spicy and it contains almost 40 per cent alcohol. Tequila is often combined with salt and lemon and drunk as a shot. However, the fine premium tequila that you will find on our shelves can also be drunk neat or chilled as a base for cocktails. The internationally popular cocktails with tequila are the Tequila Sunrise and the Margarita. Tequila is categorised as unaged, joven, reposado and viejo.
