- -Wakasa-nuri chopsticks are produced in the town of Obama in Fukui Prefecture. The beautiful lacquerwork and magnificent designs are characterised by the use of layers of coloured lacquer, which are applied to elements made from shell and eggshell and then carefully sanded and polished to create unique patterns. The history of Wakasa lacquerware dates back more than 400 years. Since the early Edo period, this craft has been nurtured within the climate and natural environment of the Wakasa region and passed down from generation to generation. The ‘HAJIME NISHI’ series combines the traditional technique of Wakasa-nuri chopsticks – a craft established by the ancestors of the Wakasa region – with the modern era. Enjoy the unique feel and charm of these distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces, which cannot be mass-produced but are created exclusively through the craftsmanship of experienced artisans. A traditional technique that has been passed down through the generations in the Wakasa region of Fukui Prefecture. Shells, foil, eggshells and other materials are carefully applied to the wood, then lacquered and painted several times. The surface is then sanded down to reveal a shimmering pattern. These chopsticks are not only practical everyday items but also valuable masterpieces of traditional craftsmanship. They embody the history, originality and unique beauty of the Wakasa-nuri lacquer art. Chopsticks made from carefully selected, locally sourced wood. These chopsticks are a special handcrafted product that makes full use of the ‘chamfering’ technique. This sophisticated craftsmanship can only be carried out by a limited number of experienced artisans. The wood exudes a natural warmth and has a pleasant feel that only this material can offer. The chopsticks are suitable both for everyday use at home and as a high-quality gift.
