The Gin Basil Smash is one of the modern cocktail classics. As a typical 'sour', the drink naturally includes citrus juice and sugar syrup in addition to high-proof spirits. Because of the crushed basil, it is sometimes also called gin pesto. It is very easy to mix and its bright green colour is a great eye-catcher.

To mix 4 drinks you need

• 6 cl gin (e.g. Turicum or Le Tribute, it should be a citrusy gin, not one with a pronounced juniper flavour)

• 3 cl fresh lemon juice

• 1 handful of basil with stems

• 2 cl sugar syrup (Make your own sugar syrup)

• Ice cubes
