How To
Valentine's Day cake decorating
"The more thoughtfully the Valentine's cake is decorated, the more romantic the dinner for two will be on Valentine's Day. I'm not just saying that, I'm speaking from experience ... It all starts quite simply with a basic cake, which I bake in the shape of a heart. A fine one, of course, like the delicious semolina cake with pistachios and rose petals. For me, the decoration starts with marzipan. I use it to cover the cake beautifully. I use marzipan in a pink base colour. Then I get out the rolling pin and roll out the marzipan on a work surface sprinkled with icing sugar to about 3 mm. Important: It should be at room temperature, only then can it be worked well. I then carefully place the rolled out marzipan exactly in the centre of the cake and gently press it down all around. I carefully cut off the excess marzipan with a knife and use biscuit moulds to cut out hearts, stars or other pretty motifs. Then I use marzipan in other shades of pink, which I also roll out to a thickness of 3 mm and cut out motifs. I decorate the covered cake with all the cut-out motifs. If I want something a little more opulent, I also sprinkle the Valentine's cake with candied rose petals, sugar pearls, edible silver dust or a few fresh berries. This makes for a wonderful, lovingly decorated cake that - I promise - hits you right in the heart."
